The Building
The current building was designed by Elbridge Boyden of Worcester, Massachusetts (who has several structures on the National Register). Architectural historians recognize it as is one of the earliest and finest examples of High Victorian Gothic architecture in the country. The imposing building features twenty-two inch thick masonry walls, Saratoga's tallest spire, a 3000 pound Meneely bell (cast in Troy) in its main tower, and sixteen Gothic stained glass windows (all non-religious) to flood the Great Hall with light. William Jennings Bryan, Teddy Roosevelt, Henry Ward Beecher, Frederick Douglass, and William Howard Taft, among others, have attended services, preached, or lectured here. |
